After completing his degree in Exercises and Health Studies, and becoming a certified personal trainer Simon has been motivating his clients to meet and exceed anything they’ve ever thought possible for their body!

Risa Shearer

Risa Shearer UBC perosnal trainingRisa has been involved in sports/gymnastics for 35 years. She was inspired at an early age by Olga Korbit and Nadia Cominici to become the best she could be and so began her journey. Risa represented Canada as a National Gymnast, was undefeated as a University gymnast and was Athlete of the Year while completing her B.A in Psychology and Physical Education. She was the director of women’s gymnastics at the Newmarket Gymnastics & Fitness Academy, training both children and adults from 1987-1995, and continued to act as their consultant until 2010. Risa has been at the center of many creative endeavors, working as a stunt performer in numerous film and television shows.

Following the birth of her first child in 2006, Risa’s focus shifted and her goal became to help women achieve a healthy lifestyle that could incorporate family, fun and fitness! As a highly certified Personal & Group Trainer, Risa is a dynamic force of energy who brings her extensive knowledge and zest for life into every training session.

Juan Laos personal trainer in ubcJuan has been involved in sports and fitness his entire life. At the age of two, Juan picked up a soccer ball and has yet to pit it down. He grew up training soccer and working as a trainer at his father’s soccer academy in Peru. Juan continued to develop his athletic ability in high school, competing at the national level in track and field in both the 100-meter and long jump, then going on to play second division level soccer (semi-pro) as a striker. He later took up jiu jitsu, muay thai, and capoeira, a Brazilian martial art, which he trained for eight years. During that time Juan began his work as a personal trainer and has since had the opportunity to work with people of all ages and abilities. With over five years of personal training experience Juan’s passion for health and fitness has only gotten stronger. When Juan isn’t in the gym or on the soccer field you can find him studying at a library or coffee shop; he is in currently studying Nutritional Science, at the University of British Columbia. ubc Fitness Instructor Matt LawSports and Fitness has been a huge part of Matt’s life. He started practicing martial arts, free style wrestling and kickboxing since when he was 7 years old. Since then, he completed in multiple kick boxing tournaments, armature and semi professional mixed martial arts championship. Matt is an international certified personal trainer and he is currently studying kinesiology (exercise science) in the University of British Columbia. Other than that, Matt has also had some very unique experiences, he has lived in many different countries helping people with different backgrounds and cultures. He is fluent in three different languages including Cantonese, Mandarin/Chinese, and English. The knowledge he got from school and his own experience on fitness and nutrition allows him to provide the best information to help others achieve their fitness goals. Matt enjoys living a healthy lifestyle and inspire others to become more motivated. He has a tremendous amount of motivation and he believes that he can pass it on to the ones around him. Ian FalconerIan has been training a variety of clients for seven years. He bring experience and positive energy to each client. He will design a personalized program to help each client achieve their goals. Monitoring progress is important to Ian as he directs his client to focus less on the final outcome and more on each step along the journey to physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
